What is the difference between a normal jigsaw and a barrel grip?

Choosing between a barrel grip and top handle Jigsaw

Common Features

Both barrel grip and top handle jigsaws are designed to perform the same tasks. Whether you need straight cuts, curves, bevels or plunge cuts, either type will handle the job effectively. They also use the same T-shank blades, so there is no difference in blade compatibility.

The choice comes down to ergonomics and personal preference. Comfort is subjective for both designs; some users prefer the closer grip of a barrel handle, while others find the top handle easier for varied positions.

1. Barrel Grip Jigsaw

  • Design: The motor housing forms the main handle, so you grip the tool by its body rather than a top-mounted handle.
  • Control: Offers a lower centre of gravity, giving better control for precise cuts, especially on curves.
  • Visibility: Your hand is closer to the cutting line, improving accuracy.
  • Comfort: Often preferred for horizontal cutting or bench work, but this depends on user preference.
  • Switch Type: Equipped with an on/off switch on the side of the barrel.

2. Top Handle Jigsaw

  • Design: Features a D-shaped handle on top of the tool.
  • Ease of Use: More intuitive for beginners and easier for vertical cutting or overhead work.
  • Comfort: Many users find this design better for extended use in varied positions, but again, this is subjective.
  • Switch Type: Uses a trigger under the top handle, allowing variable speed control while cutting.
