How to Change a Jigsaw Blade
1. Safety First
- Switch off the jigsaw and disconnect from the mains (for corded models) or remove the battery pack (for cordless models).
- Wear gloves when handling blades—they are sharp and may be hot after use.
- Always keep hands away from the cutting area.
2. Identify the Correct Blade Type
- Ryobi Jigsaws use T-shank blades (also called tang shank)
- T-shank blades provide a secure fit and quick-change capability without tools.
- Ensure the blade is suitable for your material:
- Wood: Coarse teeth for fast cuts.
- Metal: Fine teeth for smooth cutting.
- Check the blade packaging for compatibility with your jigsaw.
3. Locate the Blade Release Mechanism
- Ryobi jigsaws feature a tool-less blade clamp with a blade release lever.
- The RJS750-G, RJS850-G & RJS18 feature a quick-change chuck for blade replacement, whilst the battery-operated RJS18X & RJS18BX feature a front-facing lever for simple switch-over.
4. Remove the Old Blade
- Pull the blade release lever (or twist quick-change chuck) fully to unlock the clamp.
- Carefully slide the old blade out of the holder.
- Dispose of damaged or worn blades safely.
5. Insert the New Blade
- Hold the new T-shank blade with teeth facing forward.
- Insert the blade shank fully into the clamp until it seats securely.
- Release the blade clamp lever or chuck to lock the blade in place.
- Tug gently on the blade to confirm it is locked.
6. Final Checks
- Ensure the blade is straight and properly aligned with the guide wheel.
- Reconnect power or reinsert the battery.
- Test the jigsaw under no load before starting your cut.
Additional Tips
- Always use blades recommended for your jigsaw model.
- Do not attempt to fit U-shank blades unless your jigsaw supports them (Ryobi models typically use T-shank only).
- Replace blades regularly for clean, accurate cuts.
