Troubleshooting: Difficulty Removing Router Bit

14/07/2026, 14:00

Difficulty removing a router bit

  1. Are you using a suitable wrench?
    • Always use the correct wrench or tool provided by RYOBI for changing bits.
    • Using the wrong tool can make it harder to loosen the collet nut and may damage the tool.
  2. Has the collet nut been overtightened?
    • An overtightened collet nut can be difficult to loosen.
    • Use the appropriate wrench (included with the Trim Router, or a 17mm or 19mm wrench) to turn the collet nut anti-clockwise—opposite to the bit’s rotation.
  3. Is the bit stuck in the collet?
    • Bits can become stuck due to dust, debris or corrosion.
    • Ensure the Trim Router is unplugged or the battery is removed for safety.
    • Apply a penetrating oil or lubricant to the collet and bit.
    • Allow time for the lubricant to penetrate before attempting removal.
  4. Is the collet nut properly engaged?
    • The collet lock button or mechanism must be engaged to hold the spindle in place during bit changes.
    • Locate and engage the spindle lock before loosening the collet nut.
  5. Is there dust or debris in the collet or around the bit?
    • Inspect the collet and bit area for foreign objects or build-up.
    • Carefully clean out any debris to ensure smooth operation and bit removal.
