How to use a Ryobi Planer

Safety First

  • Always remove battery before making any adjustments to the planer

Appropriate PPE

  • Eye protection
  • Hearing protection
  • Dust mask

  1. Setting up the planer
    • Set the chip exhaust to desired direction and attach the dust bag to the selected exhaust
    • Adjust the depth adjustment to your desired level.
      • It is typically better to start when a lighter cut (0.5mm to 1mm) as this allows greater control and a smoother finish. If the material removal is too slow the depth can always be increased.
    • Check the router blades are chip free. DO NOT TOUCH the blades without gloves.
If the blades are chipped, either flip the blades (blades are double sided) or replace them.
  2. Setting up the work piece
    • Set up your work piece in a clean, well lit and ventilated area
    • Ensure there are no nails, stapes or other debris on the path of the cut.
    • Ensure the workpiece is securely fixed or clamped.
    • Set up the work piece so that you can plane along the grain which will leave a better finish.
  3. Using the planer
    • When ready to go, insert battery or plug in planer.
It is recommended to use a 4Ah or larger battery if possible.
    • Always keep 2 hands on the tool at all times.
    • Always let the planer get up to full speed before engaging the cut.
  4. Making the cut
    • Position the planer so that the front flat of the planer is resting on the workpiece, but the blade is off the workpiece.
    • Start the planer by pushing in the lock-off button then pulling the trigger.
    • Allow the planer to reach full speed before engaging in the cut
    • Push the planer, with the grain, smoothly and steadily through the cut. Try to keep even pressure throughout.
  5. After the cut
    • When placing the planer down, do not let the Blade rest directly on a surface.
    • Place the planer down using the built in kickstand to keep the blade off the surface or on its side.
  6. Storage
    • Before storing the planer remove the battery/disconnect from power.
    • Dial the depth adjustment back to the lowest setting.
