What do the modes mean on a Rotary Hammer Drill and when would I use them?

Most Rotary Hammer drills will have a mode selector to change between Drill, Hammer Drill & Chiselling Modes:

SYMBOL MODE TASK
Drilling Drilling Drilling into Wood, Metal or Plastic
Hammer Drilling Hammer Drilling Drilling into Concrete & Masonry
Chiselling (Hammer) Chiselling (Hammer) Chiselling of floor tiles, Breaking up mortar off bricks
Chisel Adjust Chisel Adjust To re position the chisel to a different axis
