Why the Tool Might Cut Out

Cutting out can happen for several reasons: bit condition, application, power supply, or tool overload.  


Safety First

  • Before performing any checks, remove the battery (for cordless models) or unplug the tool from mains power (for corded models) to ensure safety.

 

1. Inspect the Bit

  • A worn, blunt, or incorrect bit is a common cause of premature stopping.
  • Look for damage such as broken cutting heads, excessive wear, or dull edges.
  • Replace if damage is found.


2. Inspect the Application

  • Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped. Loose material can cause binding or kickback.
  • Confirm the bit is suitable for the material and within its capacity (usually marked on the bit or packaging).


3. Inspect the Battery (Cordless Models)

  • Check the charge level. Low charge can reduce power output and cause the tool to stop under load.
  • Recharge or swap the battery if needed.
  • Rotary hammer drills draw high power. Use a 4Ah battery or larger for best performance.

 

4. Inspect the Power Cord (Corded Models)

  • Check the cord for damage or fraying, do not use if the cord is damaged.
  • If using an extension cord, keep it under 25 m to avoid voltage drop.

 

5. Inspect the Tool

  • Overheating can cause cut-outs. This happens when the tool is pushed beyond its rated capacity or used continuously without breaks.
  • If the tool stops:
    • Remove it from the workpiece.
    • Check battery level and test under no load.
    • If it works, resume at a slower speed or with less force.
    • If it doesn’t, remove the battery and let the tool cool for 30 minutes before retrying.
       

If the Issue Persists

If the tool is still under warranty, return it to Bunnings with your receipt or proof of purchase for assessment.
